In 1991 Manchester United listed on the stock market in an effort to raise money and bring about sporting and financial success. It worked; but at what price?

14 years on the Old Trafford club is set to be taken private once again following Malcolm Glazer's takeover - a move that will shroud the club in secrecy at a time when its finances are more important than ever.

A similar thing happened two years ago at Chelsea when another billionaire appeared, bought the club lock, stock and oil barrel before taking it off the publicly traded market.

The key difference is that where Chelsea fans are now indebted to Roman Abramovich, United are now facing a future in debt because of their new owner. Anyone clinging to hopes that Glazer will be a sugar daddy is sorely mistaken.

Of course, Glazer will now wage a PR war. He'll probably offer cash to strengthen the team and maybe offer Sir Alex Ferguson a long-term contract; sweeteners in an attempt to get people back into their boycotted seats and overstocked mega store.

But simply refraining from using Vodafone mobile phones, shunning Nike shoes, not buying season tickets and refusing to buy replica shirt will not be enough to stop Glazer.

A man who deals in millions will not be deterred by the valiant and heartfelt resistance being waged by the men and women of Shareholders Untied.

SU number around 28,000; which is a sizeable amount. But for a club which in the last few years has boasted a worldwide fanbase of 50 million, SU's current membership is a drop in the ocean.

Glazer knows this and will be basing his business plans not on the hardcore supporters of Salford, but on those millions he feels are an untapped resource.

The whole sorry episode is anathema to football fans who prize tradition and heritage, but Glazer is a businessman and while former glories offer interesting context, the real money is to be made 'going forward' and television is the way to do it.

The current Premier League television rights deal will end in May 2007. At present the 20 clubs pool their rights together and sell them collectively via the league and share the pot. It works well, especially for the smaller clubs who benefit from the league's big name clubs and players.

At the moment the Premiership's domestic deal is worth in excess of £1 billion over three years, while its international deal is worth in the region of £300 million. The combined total is then shared out.

The European Union has been increasingly unhappy with the collective sale of rights and is keen for the practise to end, which would play perfectly into Glazer's hands - a fact he knows only too well.

If United seize control of their own television rights MUTV, the club's television channel, could become the only place to watch Premiership games played at Old Trafford.

How much could a Glazer-led United earn if MUTV were available in the homes of the club's 50 million fans, with games yours on pay-per-view for $20 each?

Consultancy firm Ernst & Young estimated earlier this year that Untied could make an extra £15 million a year by selling its own TV rights. Given Glazer's aggressive stance thus far, that figure seems a little conservative.

Other big Premiership clubs could benefit in the short-term from an end to collective TV rights sales, but the vast majority would suffer. And not just in the Premiership; money from TV filters through to lower leagues, granted not in huge amounts but its more than nothing, which is exactly what they can look forward to if Glazer gets his way.

Taken to its logical conclusion the top five clubs in the Premiership would be able to remain competitive by selling their own TV rights, but the other 15 clubs would suffer hugely - even the big clubs need someone to play against.

This would ultimately mean a reduction in meaningful domestic fixtures and lead the top clubs to look elsewhere for week-in-week-out matches that could sell PPV tickets; European Super League anyone?

Broadcasters and sponsors and money men in general will be smacking their lips at the prospect, but is this really why we started following football?

Hindsight is a strange thing; wonderful and useless at the same time. The same is true of maxims like 'you play with fire, you get burned'. You can't really live your life by them, let alone run a business by them, but sooner or later you'll wish you had.

Listing on the stock market ultimately led to the Glazer takeover. But listing was not the only instance of a regrettable decision, another came when Ferguson's political manoeuvrings clashed with his hobby.

Problems with the club's board led the Scot to tout the merits of buying into United to the now infamous 'Coolmore Mafia'. Ferguson hoped that having his wealthy then-pals John Magnier and JP McManus owning a sizeable chunk of United would give him extra bargaining power at the club.

Unfortunately the nascent Celtic triumvirate with a shared love of horse-racing fell out over ownership of the stud rights to Rock of Gibraltar; Ferguson's political machinations left him with burnt hands.

The Irishmen were never football fans and were never interested in anything other than making money. Yesterday they walked away with upwards of £70 million in pure profit after a few years investing in United, and, in a final act of revenge, left Ferguson's empire in the control of a reclusive septuagenarian who sued his sisters over the will of their late mother - not the ideal candidate to run a much-loved community asset.

There is however hope. PPV only works if the product on offer is worth paying for. United are already in trouble on the pitch and are in need of at least a new goalkeeper and some steel in midfield; talent doesn't come cheap and it takes a shrewd manager to pick them and forge a team around them.

One asset Glazer needs to hold on to is Ferguson, a man who could easily walk away from the club after the FA Cup final. Ferguson would be the perfect steward for Glazer; he could keep the team's promising players, nurture any new signings and be a link between owner and fans. Losing Ferguson would be a disaster.

However, there is growing suspicion the Ferguson will indeed bring his 19-year tenure to an end after the Cardiff showdown with Arsenal.

Remove Ferguson and you have an ailing team without its patriarch; a failing team could swiftly follow. If Cristiano Ronaldo were to be tempted by Real Madrid and Wayne Rooney by Chelsea, the club would be without its most promising players. All of a sudden United could crumble from a giant into midtable also-ran shorn of superstars.

How then to convince a world of United fans to pay good money for PPV games; to buy merchandise and products from credit cards to Ryan Giggs bedspreads?

How many of the 50 million worldwide fans will switch to Chelsea if failure and mediocrity follows a decade of success? Johnny Come-Lately is a fickle fan - if you're not winning you're nowhere, his attention and money will go on the next new craze, be it Chelsea or Star Wars or Pokemon.

Glazer must tread carefully if he is to avoid the collapse of Manchester United. The hundreds of millions of debt he has taken in order to assume control of Old Trafford is only serviceable if the club remains a winning force and loyal fans pay to be associated.

That, it seems, is the only hope for fans like those within Shareholders United: watch and hope as the club bleeds to death, wait until Glazer is forced to quit and then hope against all else that the phoenix can rise from the ashes.

Whatever the outcome for the club, SU and Ferguson the day Manchester United were sold to the Glazer will be remembered as a dark day for football.

Been bored for a few days, but i'm going to gym more often now, and i've decided that's a good thing, as is going clubbing and playing soccer. I've finally accepted that i'm not exactly over-weight, i just gotta replace all that fat with muscles. from the start of April, i've been concentrating on building up muscles instead of burning calories.. Gearing up for sports competitions looming in the distance.. bowling at the end of April and the soccer tourny held by the law society some time soon. I recently discovered my feet are just as nimble as they were in Form 3-4(the peak of my soccer playing days so far) Thank God i haven't really lost it, i'm just a little unfit now, that can be promptly remedied. One thing i'm not doing, i'm not gonna play 'keeper for the soccer team, my hands have suffered enough both playing 'keeper at school and futsal 'keeper at Adelaide.. not to mention the weird finger disease i got Winter '03. Anyway, i'm very happy with the gym gloves i got last week, Nike, really helps with my weights... my hand used to get very raw before..
Dad's gone to Melby, so i get to start the Porsche every day. Oh, joy. Argh, now i can't come back late... my mom gets worried if i'm out late.. what a bummer. Anyway, can't wait for some events to come to pass... lotsa things happening... can't wait..

woohoo... went clubbing last night, had the time of my life... Of course i drank like a fish, but... what can i say.... i ruled the dance floor that night, along with IPG's dancing queen... you know who you are ;)

It started early, not looking so up as i had come much earlier compared to everyone else... the initial namelist for the night only had 8 names: Kit, Chean Ling, Elicia, Claudia, Hsiau Hwei, poh Kheng, Brenda(Elicia's friend) and me. I waited in my car for a while before going down when Claudia called to say they were near already. Down there, just outside of Chill Out, i waited for them.. pretending to be busy on my phone. Well, what do you know... there was Yu Shin and Evon... they came out of the front door of the Tower.. they parked on the same level as me... then the group of seven arrived, the others in the above list.It seems clauds called my old pal Jeremy Gomes and his friends... two of them, Michael and SomeoneElse.

Anyway, we got into the club, and got down to business... i took a longer time to get into the mood of things compared to Kit and the girls, but when i finally did... ooh boy.. and then something happened that caught me by surprise... hmm.. can't talk about it in detail... in fact i've said all i can about it already. Anyway, you wanna know more, msg me on MSN, i'll put you on the waiting list for those who wanna know more ;P

The passing of a friend

It's really really sad when shit happens to old friends... A few days ago, a friend of mine from 6 years ago took his life when it all became too much for him to take. The time when i really knew him, he was always pleasant to me, and to all my other friends. He was a little on the quieter side in class, his closest friends being the noisiest. Those closest to him would understand what the world has lost with his departure from out midst.

I acknowledge what Alvin tried to do in his blog, but i feel that respecting his memory would be to recognise the intent with which he left us. I'm not gonna touch on how he took his life; all i'm gonna say is that he was frustrated with his condition, and with his last words he expressed that he didn't wish to burden is parents with his problems anymore.

When i Alt-Tab to my friendster bulletin board, all the posts have the same title : In Loving Memory : TWL(i'm not divulging his name). Many of us you've left behind, TWL, all of us wishing you were still here. May we all meet again some time in another time and place. Till then, rest in peace.

If there is one thing that Muslims excel at, it is producing some truly terrifying villains. From the cave-dwelling Bin Laden to the one-eyed hook-handed Abu Hamza, Muslim bogeymen have a comic-book badness. This week another name was added to the roll call of the Muslim Hall of Shame. Saajid Badat is not in the same league as Bin Laden; what makes him so scary is his apparent normality. This was someone with a Gloucester childhood and Church of England grammar school education who looked for all the world like he was perfectly integrated into society. And yet, despite those outward appearances, Badat was harbouring murderous intentions and, before his last-minute change of heart, was planning to blow up a passenger plane. Badat chillingly embodies everything that others - OK, whites - fear about British Muslims. And the most depressing aspect to his story? That these days it is no longer surprising: the wellspoken, well-adjusted terrorist has, in the course of a few years, become distressingly familiar.
In the same week that Badat - the son of Pakistani immigrants - became the first British-born Muslim to be convicted of plotting a terror attack, the BBC, with exquisite timing, is broadcasting a series of programmes examining British Pakistanis. The stated reason for the series is to focus attention on an ethnic group under-represented by the media. That is true, but an unacknowledged motive for throwing the spotlight on British Pakistanis has to be that, for many people, the only time they hear about them is when they read about unsavoury characters such as Badat. With his bespectacled and bearded face glaring out from this week's newspapers a more rounded depiction of the community has to be a good thing.

Every time we hear of a British Muslim arrested on terror charges a familiar debate begins on how someone with such a normal background could have become seduced into the cause of extreme Islam. Those questions are valid and appropriate; what I have less time for are the inevitable demands, usually from the right, that other Muslims disassociate themselves from the actions of such extremists. It happened again yesterday with a spokesman for the Muslim Council of Britain saying that Badat could expect "no sympathy" from British Muslims. Each time there is an atrocity or outrage, Muslims are expected to apologise as if each and every one is somehow complicit. Given this it is not surprising that Muslims are lumped together in the public consciousness with illegal immigrants and asylum seekers to create one blurry unwelcome mass of people whose values are antithetical to mainstream liberal democracy.

What I find most curious is that it is only Islam which tends to be criticised and condemned for being outdated and incompatible with modern society.

I was asked to make a documentary for the Pakistani Actually season and gained the distinct impression that the programme was intended to uncover the rise of Islamic fundamentalism among young British Pakistanis. Once I actually started talking to some of these young men it became pretty clear that, as I had suspected, most simply do not recognise their portrayal in the media as terrorists-in-waiting. The vast majority are merely trying to do the best for themselves and their families and struggling with the same challenges as everyone else. The perceived clash between Islam and modern society is, I think, hugely overstated. However, I am not sure that the same can be said for all religions.

"Of all religions, the Christian is undoubtedly that which should instil the greatest toleration, although so far the Christians have been the most intolerant of all men." That was Voltaire in 1763, and I'm not sure how much has changed. It is Muslims who are condemned as book-burning bigots whose religion poses a challenge to freedom of speech. But which religion bombarded the BBC in an orchestrated display of outrage about a television programme? It is Muslims who are accused of mistreating their women and refuse to allow them true equality. But which religion's representatives would rather bomb abortion clinics than tolerate the idea of a woman's right to choose? And while it is Muslims who are criticised for their intolerant attitudes to homosexuality would anyone like to hazard a guess at which religion is convulsed in arguments about gay marriage? If I really wanted to ram home the point I could also mention that while it was a Sikh play which grabbed headlines for tackling child abuse, by far the most widespread occurrences of child abuse have not been in mosques or gurdwaras, but in churches.

While everyone else is in fear of extreme Islam there seems to be little sign of moral panic over extreme Christianity. And yet, with its intolerant and illiberal views, I am beginning to suspect that it might just not be compatible with a modern liberal society. Before the 47,000 emails start flooding in I know, I know: the Christians I am referring to are just a lunatic fringe and not representative of the wider religion. Most Christians are decent law-abiding people and I should not think that these few extremists are in any way representative of the wider community. Which is something to recall the next time a young grammar-educated British Pakistani appears on the front page of your newspaper.

I am travelling to Pakistan later this month. There is some disagreement as to the reasons for my trip: I think I am going to collect my mother who has been there for the past five months. My mother thinks I am going to find a potential bride. Apparently she has lined up a number of girls who will be introduced to me. When I warned her that there was a possibility that my ideal woman may not come from a Pakistani village she reminded me that it would be considered impolite to refuse all the girls. I gently explained that being considered impolite was a risk that I was prepared to take. Having spent my life in Britain I am slightly alarmed by the idea of such induced introductions and find the rituals that go with it rather alien. While I would not try to defend any of it I do find the reaction of my white friends rather amusing. Where is the romance in such a contrived scenario they ask, what about serendipity and spontaneity and that crazy little thing called love? They say these things as they race to their next speed-dating night or while busy finding the love of their life on some random internet site.

Lately been hunting for a phone to replace my current half-functioning Nokia 6220. Not a day ago i was very well settled on a Sony Ericsson S700i, Swing it. However, went to Prangin Mall with Claudia, went phone hunting with my hunting partner. Guy in the shop promptly burst my S700i bubble with his customer feedback about the phone... it hangs lah.. this lah.. that lah... Anyway, Clauds was planning to get the 7610... man.. she really can pick 'em. This phone seemed at first to me all flash, no substance. Maybe i didn't open my eyes to the features it has.. 1 megapixel camera, MP3 playback... And the salesman didn't have any complaints about it either... Symbian based and all that... Hey, Janet, if the mobile talk is boring you i'll post something about the Oscars tomorrow morning... msian time that is. gotta get this stuff out of my system.. hehe

Choosing between friends? That's a tough order. What does it mean if you can't choose your own friends, rather you're other friendships are under threat as an outcome of your choice?

The frailties of the human psyche are staggering, when very suddenly thrust upon you. It saddens me to think that people (very selfishly) blow things out of proportion, the repercussions of which, others are hurt emotionally, and ones world collapses. Isn't it really dumb the way friends fight to protect their friends, when the first two friends could live in harmony, while the troubled ones figure out the situation independantly? Wouldn't life be much simpler if people were straight forward, rather than talking and bitching behind others backs?

Pity i can't type as fast as my mind thinks. The above paragraphs are a jumble of what i meant to say at first. Fuck this. I have better things to do with my time than moan and groan about people's stupidity, mine included. Shit happens.

Went clubbing yesterday as part-celebration for Syl's birthday... started the day usual enough, went to school much too early, tried doing an assignment in the car while waiting for the doors to open, went about college with my usual swagger, and then came lunch time... planning time. It was then decided that i would be transporter for the group from college, a role i was happy to play. Probably shows how hard up i am when it comes to clubbing, anything to make the party work... Anyway, we managed to get a number of people along for the ride from Prem's hostel. Lucky we got them too.. you will see their roles in this later. Anyway, got the people checked into the hotel straight away after college, and then we(me and Stef) had to go to our respective homes to pick up more stuff for the night out. Typical of my luck, 15 people must have seen me with 3 girls in the car driving down Green Road 2... Tongues will wag.
So back to the hotel after picking up my shirt and loafers... Hung around in their room, met Syl's sister... i get the distinct impression i've seen her somewhere before... i wouldn't be surprised. Exchanged pleasant conversation, followed by the tough, tough persuasion to get some people to bathe. My goodness. After complimenting each other on their llooks, we head out to SS. After dropping them, i go to the hostel to pick up Prem and his friends, and we find that one of them has been left behind... the jokers...
The rest is history then... the first time i've gone clubbing in Penang. And in what company. The clubbing elite. Had the most fun i've had since i don't know when... prob Aug 2004, yes, you know what happened then.
I think the classmate count was at 7, yes, seven of us DILs were there at SS livin it up that night. The Magnificent Seven were Sylvia(our unanimous leader), Stef, Rhina, Gopi(the Coalition leader), Raj, Timothy and myself(Big Daddy Pimp).
To keep it short, i burned up the floor with my shuffle-quickstep, got the girls giggling, and blew Gopi away in our 2-minute battle... I'm modest, press me no more..
Anyway, i turned out too drunk to drive myself home, So was driven back in the Perdana by a very nice chap named Vincent, his friend Chan drove behind so he could make a hasty return to SS. Thanks guys.
Anyways, i'm in kinda a hurry to get back to SS, anyone game?

wow, no one saw this coming... Penang hit by a tidal wave.. Aren't we supposed to be safe from this sort of thing? The power of nature seems to forget trivial facts like that once in every while... I am foremost relieved that no one i personally know has been affected by this tragedy, and not far from my thoughts are those who lives have been tainted by it. I actually do know people who live not a stones throw away from affected sites, but they have been fortunate... I pity the tourists who have had the misfortune of being on the beach then, for they would have seen unprecedented climate in the history of Penang. Of course it's something to tell the grandkids, but Penangites would rather them exaggerate the beauty of Penang. Well, rather than polishing the Pearl of the Orient, this bout of oversized waves has ushered in speculation concerning the safety of this island from the forces of nature...

Lately have this thing for latin music.. can't wait to get my CD back from Clauds... yeah, that's the one with paraguayan music. I can't quite point out what it is i see in the music that so captivates me, it's just the impression of spontaneity you sense when listening i suppose, i can't put words to the style this particular band has adopted in their music, it mesmerizes me.

Not the best of movies... they shoulda left out the lip-synched songs... made the whole thing very corny, the way the girls voices and singing style changes every 10 minutes... I'd give it a 5/10, 3 of those marks coming from the atmosphere... 3 girls on either side of me... not to mention the popcorn Rhina let me share... Too many songs in this movie, so much so it becomes muchas Bollywood-esque, and anyone who knows me truly knows i'm hardly a bollywood fan. The only few people i can tell apart from the rest are prob those in Mohabatein(is that spelt right?) and Aishwarya. Prob the odd other person too, but no names come to mind.

Not worth a second watch. For me, not worth a first watch even. But who am i to turn down the pleasure of sitting with 3 hot chicks in a theater? Aight, 3 pretty girls, that's for you feminists out there...

I'm visibly slacking off where posting in my blog is concerned, lots of other work to do.. ... what with being elected joint class representative alongside Joy... and so my duties pile up. If any of you were wondering how on earth i got elected, let me tell you that it was totally and utterly insulting. But i wasn't listening, my ears were ringing with the shouts for my nomination. Well, basically, 5 of us were nominated, and the other 3 dropped out, giving me and Joy the posts by default. Sheesh. But not that i mind, i was hoping for the post anyway. And perhaps a promotion later on? We'll see about that. I heard that Premjit and Claudia were also elected representatives of their class, but it seems that it was Premjit and Regina, some other girl. Bah, i thought it might be that the one group of us could make up the majority of the exco. Anyway, this way's fine... we'll get along swimmingly. Amanda seems to have dissapeared off the face of earth, and undoubtedly, everyone's asking me where she is. 'Why would i know?' i reply, twiddling my thumbs, eyes pointed skyward.

Anyway, i'm now waiting for the society secretary to send me a mail of some sort, i dunno... to tell me my duties? And so i wait, wait, wait.....

Someone remind me to check the tires on the Volvo.. it was riding low/lop-sided on the way to school, upon arrival, i forgot to look into the matter.

Otherwise, life looking up. Besides spending time on this and studying, probably getting through 3 movies a week, DVDs of course, who has the time to go to the cinema nowadays..? Couples, perhaps. And you, Ben, all the time in the world.. probably bored out of your brains by now, eh?

Anyway, unsure of where going for lunch, will play it by ear. Either my own ear, or Joy's ear. That too is gonna be played by ear. Someone's ear. Perhaps just someone off the streets.

Law is a lot of reading, i've found much to my chagrin, more reading than i imagined myself doing at first, but at least it's bearable. I suppose it's a question of time-management, not so much of slogging it out, sweating profusely, bent over books all the time. I think, at least for now, that group study is going to be an integral part of studying law, there's just way too much material from too many sources to gather at any one time, for any one case.

To all my classmates who happen to read this, if you happen to have the free time(that excludes you Joy :) ), there are some fiction books and movies that i would recommend seeing, them being right up our alleys(i don't mean to be rude.) I will soon post a list or two in the side-bar with the titles of said materials. Note, and please be impressed by the flowery(translation from Malay) writing. Thank yoiu. Err, I mean, thank you. Now get off my page, or i'll sue you for tresspassing. No easements here, guys and gals.

At the stroke of 9 am, here i sit.. at the computer. No, not at home, at college... kinda weird, class doesn't start for.. hmm.. lets see.. 14-9, 5 hours. And a half. I think. Gotta check my timetable later.
Probably going out to Gurney Plaza later with Rhina, Diana and Sylvia.. Rhina has to buy some tickets for the ICT performance she's going for on Thursday.. i'm going for the Friday show. Wonder why the other two are tagging along, probably to chaperone us, Rhina and me. Come to think of it, it was Rhina who asked them along... why though?? Scared of me? 'lil ol' me? Hah. That's a joke.. who's scared of me? Have yet to meet someone who is.. damn my self-control and good nature.
Anyway.. Man Utd beat Liverpool yesterday, so things are starting to look up for us. From what i hear, it was a deserved victory. YES, i admit it.. i didn't watch the match, although it must have been playing on all channels, given the magnitude of its importance. Sue me. Or rather, sue my mom. She wouldn't have let me watch it, now that my exam is less than 9 months away.
